2005 United States Poker Championship

, 2005-10-10, by TwoGun

Many people may remember watching John Aglialoro defeat Joe Cassidy heads-up to win the 2004 United States Poker Championship on ESPN. This year, new faces will be seen on ESPN, some of them will be quite familiar. However, the champion of the 2005 United States Poker Championship will be an unfamiliar one.

New York City resident James Caporuscio navigated his way through a 226 player field at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City to win the $831,000 first place prize. Caporuscio won a heads-up battle against a friend from his home game, Ralph Pecorale, who received $436,000 for 2nd.

Three well-known pros each came close to winning this tournament for themselves. Steve Brecher, Men Nguyen, and John Juanda finished 3rd, 4th, and 5th; respectively. Two-time bracelet winner Mark Seif won $28,000 for 11th place. Kathy Liebert (13th), WPT champion Surinder Sunar (16th), and Paul Magriel (19th) also finished in the money.

This tournament will air next spring on ESPN, and will be hosted by familiar voices Lon McEachern and Norman Chad.
